Rothenburg, I think this village was the one on our journey I was looking forward to the most. Walking from the train, approaching this preserved, charming, medieval town in Bavaria was like being transported back in time. It actually felt like walking onto a movie set.
The town is completely protected by a 3-mile-long stone wall. When we entered through the gate, the beauty surpassed my wildest imagination. We were greeted with winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture. The view of the town seemed to transport me back into the twelfth century. Rothenburg was founded in the 11th century and has remained nearly untouched, miraculously surviving numerous wars.
At the center of the town is the Marktplatz, an open town square surrounded by impressive half-timbered buildings. There is a huge town hall built in Gothic architecture with colorful frescoes on its facade. Heading out of the square and into the streets, you'll find beautifully preserved houses and churches. After we explored the inner city, we took a hike along the city walls where we were rewarded with sweeping views of the town and surrounding countryside.
During our stay, we took a stroll outside the wall into the countryside, away from all the tourists. Again, Julie and I felt like young backpackers in love, wandering the German countryside filled with apples, pears, and even plum trees ripe for the picking. The fruit was as sweet and as fresh as the air we were breathing.
Our hotel was called The Historic Gotischer Haus. It was located in the heart of the city and was one of the most charming hotels I've ever stayed in. Julie and I experienced the timeless magic of bygone eras in a lovely restored patrician house. The natural stone masonry, intricate wooden beams, and decor created an authentic environment that made us feel like we were living in part of history. We felt totally safe with our own personal cannon in our room and the night watchman who roamed the streets at night, keeping the town and its residents safe.
Rothenburg is one of our favorite towns that we have visited in our many adventures. But unfortunately, with mass tourism, I can see some of the barns turning into hotels, its livestock will become tourists, and Rothenburg unfortunately may be on its way to becoming a medieval theme park.
