Athens Greece
Greetings everybody from modern-day Athens, Greece.
We began our day by going out for breakfast and coffee. We discovered a small pastry coffee shop where we enjoyed a traditional breakfast pastry, which was a meat pie. It was delicious, with a nice and flaky crust. The Americano was excellent, so I had a couple of cups, and now I'm ready to meet up with everyone.
Our first destination today is the Acropolis, just a 15-minute walk from our hotel. We headed uphill, and upon reaching the south entrance, we began to see ruins even before reaching the hill's summit. Along the way, we encountered the Theater of Dionysus, the Stoa of Herodes Atticus, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, all stunning sites. The climb was definitely uphill. The temperature started rising, reaching the 80s even before 9 a.m. Once at the top, the view was truly spectacular. Despite the sun beating down on us, the sight was beautiful. We could overlook the city, with panoramic views all around, and even catch a glimpse of the Aegean Sea from that vantage point.
After spending roughly an hour exploring the various ruins, we moved on to our next destination, which was nearby. This location, known as Areopagus Hill or Mars Hill, is mentioned in Acts 17, starting from verse 16, where Paul debated with Greek philosophers. The site was quite remarkable, with many marble walkways and a hilltop entirely made of marble, which made it very slippery. Afterwards, we continued walking, and to our left was the ancient Agora. This was the center of public life in ancient Athens, where Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle interacted with the citizens. It is also where Paul gave a sermon encouraging the people to abandon idolatry. This event is recorded in Acts 17:16-34 and marked a significant moment in the spread of Christianity in Greece. In this area, there was also the Temple of Hephaestus, the Stoa of Attalos, and the Church of the Holy Apostles. According to Acts 17:17, this is where Paul had many daily discussions in the synagogues and the marketplace. The church is constructed on the marketplace where these events occurred, making it quite interesting to see.
Feeling pretty hungry, we stumbled upon a cozy little restaurant in Thissio. Most folks were digging into a classic Greek salad. I decided to go for a pork and pepper dish, which had great flavor, even though the pork was a bit overcooked. All in all, it was a satisfying lunch!
After lunch, we began exploring various neighborhoods. Our first stop was Plaka. We strolled through Psyrri and admired numerous street art murals. At Iroon Square, which seems to be a hub for nightlife, we found many cafés and taverns. Hidden away in an alley was a charming little Byzantine church. The area was fascinating, with a variety of local artisan shops, leather goods, handmade items, and small workshop stores. It was a really neat spot.
After leaving there, we headed to Plaka, where we found one of the best spots, a charming neighborhood called Anafiotika. This area featured Cycladic-style whitewashed houses and was situated directly beneath the Acropolis. Due to its small size, with narrow lanes and roads, it required being quiet, it is difficult to describe. Afterward, we went to visit the Roman Agora, an ancient marketplace where we saw the Tower of the Winds, the first meteorological clock. As we continued, we encountered plenty of neoclassical architecture, with pastel homes and charming little balconies, making it a truly delightful experience.
Seeing all the flushed faces and sweat-soaked shirts, it was clear we needed some rest back at the hotel, so we took a break for a couple of hours. The temperature was nearing 95°, and the sky was cloudless, with the sun beating down intensely. After that, we planned to go to dinner. Although we had reservations, we weren't really hungry after a late lunch and the heat, so we decided to explore the streets of Athens instead, which turned out to be a great idea. We visited Syntagma Square, wandered through various neighborhoods, and discovered some traditional Greek street foods. We also enjoyed a delicious margherita pizza and browsed numerous shops. It was a fulfilling day, and we gradually made our way back to the hotel, deciding to call it a night. That wraps up today. It was a successful day, and I'm excited about what tomorrow will bring.
