Santorini: Clifftop Views, Sunsets, and Unforgettable Walks
After several wonderful days on Naxos, we boarded an early morning ferry bound for Santorini. The journey across the Aegean was smooth, and by around midday, we arrived at one of Greece's most iconic islands. From the port, we made our way to our accommodations, Merovigliosso Apartments, located high above the caldera in the beautiful village of Imerovigli. Perched along the cliffs and just off the main street, the hotel offered breathtaking views. From our balcony, we could gaze across the volcanic caldera, watch ferries crossing the deep blue waters below, and see the picturesque town of Oia stretching along the distant cliffs.
That evening, we set out on foot to explore Fira, Santorini's bustling capital. The walk itself was part of the adventure, following the famous caldera path that winds along the edge of the cliffs. Every turn revealed another spectacular view of whitewashed buildings cascading down the hillside and the sparkling sea hundreds of feet below.
Once in Fira, we settled into a charming tavern for dinner and enjoyed a relaxed meal overlooking the island's dramatic landscape. Afterward, we wandered through some of the local shops before making our way back toward the cliffside paths. As the sun began its descent, the island entered its magical golden hour. The white buildings glowed in shades of gold and orange while the volcanic islands rising from the center of the caldera became silhouettes against the colorful sky.
We watched the sun slowly disappear beyond the horizon, painting the sky with remarkable colors before darkness settled across the island. The evening became even more memorable as Santorini hosted one of its special annual celebrations. Drones illuminated the night sky before a spectacular fireworks display erupted above the volcanic islands in the caldera. Surrounded by the glow of fireworks reflected on the water, it was an unforgettable experience.
Following the celebration, we began our walk back to Imerovigli. The cliffside villages were beautifully lit, with lights from homes, hotels, and churches tracing the contours of the caldera. The peaceful stroll beneath the stars, with the sea shimmering below, made for a perfect ending to an extraordinary day.
The next morning, we met up with the entire Vogt family, all of us gathering together for one of Santorini's most famous hikes. Starting in Imerovigli, we followed the trail north along the rim of the caldera toward Oia. The route offered nonstop panoramic views of steep cliffs, whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, and the endless blue waters of the Aegean Sea.
We took our time along the trail, stopping frequently to photograph the scenery and admire the island from different vantage points. Every section of the hike seemed to reveal a new postcard-worthy view. After arriving in Oia, we rewarded ourselves with a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant before exploring the town's narrow pathways and cliffside viewpoints. Eventually, we grabbed a taxi back to Imerovigli and spent a relaxing evening together, capped off with another wonderful dinner overlooking the caldera.
Our final morning in Santorini began with a climb to Skaros Rock, the dramatic rocky promontory that rises from the edge of Imerovigli. The hike led us down winding paths and around the base of the massive formation, offering incredible perspectives of the cliffs and sea. Skaros has long been one of Santorini's most recognizable landmarks, and exploring its trails allowed us to experience some of the island's natural beauty away from the crowds.
While some of us explored Skaros Rock, Sherri chose to enjoy a leisurely morning shopping in town. After completing our hike, we met up with her and spent time browsing the shops and wandering the charming streets of Imerovigli. The afternoon was relaxed, allowing us to soak in the atmosphere of the village and enjoy our final full day on the island.
That evening we shared another delicious dinner while taking in the stunning views one last time. As the sun slipped below the horizon, the caldera once again glowed with shades of gold, orange, and pink. Watching another Santorini sunset from the cliffs of Imerovigli provided a fitting conclusion to our time on the island.
Between the spectacular hikes, unforgettable sunsets, charming villages, and the extraordinary fireworks over the caldera, our days in Santorini were filled with moments we will remember for years to come. It was the perfect finale to our journey through the Greek Islands.
